Hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition are major challenges in many parts of the world. Soil degradation and increased water stress worldwide are the major obstacle in the way of the resilient agrifood system. It has been estimated that, across the globe, over 800 Mha of land is affected by salts which include both salinity and alkalinity. Under stress conditions, soil, plant and microorganisms form a unique mutualistic relationship in and around the rhizosphere. Soil microorganisms inhabiting the rhizosphere, called Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR), possesses the potential to enhance plant growth through several mechanisms and also alleviate the effect of abiotic stresses on plants. Dr Arvind Kumar Rai is Head of the Division of Soil and Crop Management at ICARCentral Soil Salinity Research Institute (CSSRI) Karnal India. He is engaged in the research of reclamation of alkali soil and alternative techniques for the use of poor-quality water. Dr Priyanka Chandra is a scientist at ICARCSSRI. Her research focusses on native mycorrhiza of salt affected soils and their assessment for improving P nutrition under salt stress. Dr Nirmalendu Basak is a Senior Scientist at ICARCSSRI. He is involved in the research of reclamation of alkali soil with different mineral chemical and biological amendments. Dr Parul Sundha is a scientist at ICAR-CSSRI. She works on the organic and chemical amendments and their ecotoxicological impacts for reclamation of sodic soils.Dr R.K. Yadav is Director at ICARCSSRI. He is engaged in research of characterization and classification of salt affected soils and poor-quality water for their productive utilization in agriculture.
