Operation Pedestal appeared to be ‘Mission Impossible’ but both the First Sea Lord, Admiral Sir Dudley Pound, and the British Premier, Winston Churchill, were determined the attempt had to be made, for both they and the British public felt that the Maltese people themselves deserved nothing less.

‘Pedestal’ was an epic battle, and proved to be the climax in defence of Malta , which was itself of heroic proportions.
